Parable of the workers in the vineyard
So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius.
Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ (Matthew 20:10, 15 NIV)
The owner was generous, but when the workers compared their pay, some felt entitled and more valuable than others. When you compare you always fall short. The owner has the ability to be generous and give increase. The amount of pat is not the issue, it’s the unmet expectations of the worker. Unmet expectations due to a faulty comparison. Both received increase…some did not have to work as hard and as long to get it. Jealousy can be the root of this unmet expectation.
A – application
no matter what the increase…I am still working for the one who is able to bring the increase. Lord, You are my source…regardless of the increase that others receive, I know if I am faithful and working hard…the increase will naturally come. Jealousy is at the root of this parable…
Lord help me to continually work hard and not fall into a comparison game and find myself frustrated by unmet expectations. Lod help me to guard my heart and my passion to work so that jealousy does not creep in.
